The challenge is different, but it’s still a challenge.
I had the opportunity to be a speaker for some breakout sessions about marketing and branding at the recent NACCAP (North American Coalition for Christian Admissions Professionals) conference in San Diego this past week. The conference was held on the grounds of Point Loma Nazarene University. Their campus overlooks the city of San Diego to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the West and it is spectacular. As admissions counselors gathered from all over the USA, I wondered if PLNU had any challenges when it comes to recruiting students. The answer surprised me.
They do have a waiting list which most schools do not. Many private institutions are working hard to get every student they can for their school. I learned the challenges PLNU faces include getting the right mix of students to balance each major and retaining students who may find it exciting to go to school on the ocean in California, but never get used to California living.
Sometimes we look at brands like Target and Apple and Starbucks and wonder if they have any real challenges with their unlimited budgets and resources. We imagine that everything is so easy when you are one of “those guys.” I imagine that like PLNU, it may appear that they have it easy, but in reality, I’m sure they have challenges, they’re just different challenges.
